Addressing the Store Clerk That Made Me Totally Speechless – I Salute You

This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I felt grumpy enough, refueling the family car. The location was a common fuel stop that operates as a grocery store, which often leads of ending up in line shoppers with carts of slightly overpriced groceries. This is a dreadful thing to unfold when your only desire is to complete a simple refueling. Awful.

My position was fourth in the queue. There was only employee working, a youthful clerk. A peculiar quality about her. When the faffer at the head of the line had completed payment for his purchases, a baked snack, and his box of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him an excellent day. Unusual. Maybe it was a mistake, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if she could even be an ally in the war on delays, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down simple fuel-buyers like me.

Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of the queue finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” No, actually, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. A stateside native? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here says to others those exact words, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter people from America frequenting this area, least of all working in petrol stations or anywhere else.

Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper engaged in a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her food items, her purse and her membership pass. The process dragged on. After she finished, she as well received the wish a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by cracking a joke at the cashier, to check for that reaction their typical stare, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” Yet no idea came of a jest to utter.

In the end, I embraced for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, that equates to the same thing – as she gazed directly into my eyes, to my very core, and told me an awesome day. It improved my mood. It was a good thing.
