A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the house near Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and another man who fled after the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene revealed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
