Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
