Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
