Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
