Citizens have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A senior representative involved in the talks revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The source said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the area

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose family member lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."

"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist a participant explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"When the evening falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.

"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we check the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area reported another two fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, medical staff stated.
