Trump Urges the Thai government to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodia Truce with ‘Threat of Tariffs’

Washington has exerted influence on the Thai administration to recommit to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, indicating that trade talks could be suspended as attempts are made to stop a Trump-mediated ceasefire arrangement from collapsing.

Rising Border Hostilities

Earlier this week, Thai officials announced it was putting on hold the truce agreement, alleging Cambodian forces of laying fresh landmines along the mutual frontier, including one that reportedly wounded a Thai military personnel on patrol, who suffered a foot amputation in the explosion.

Since then, a fatality occurred and multiple individuals injured by exchanges of fire along the border between the two nations, raising concerns of a fresh wave of retaliatory clashes.

American Economic Leverage

On Saturday, a representative from Thailand's foreign office informed reporters that a official communication from the Office of the US Trade Representative declaring the suspension of trade deal talks was obtained on Friday night.

He quoted the document as stating that discussions on trade – which are addressing a US tariff of 19% – could resume once the Thai government renewed its pledge to implementing the joint ceasefire declaration.

“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” said another government spokesperson.

Trump’s Tariff Threat

Addressing reporters on Air Force One as he traveled to the Sunshine State on the end of the week, the US leader implied that he had employed tariff warnings in calls with the ASEAN nation heads.

The US president said, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they’re doing great. I think they’re gonna be fine.”

Truce Deal Origins

Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has touted it as one of multiple agreements around the globe he says should earn him the Nobel Peace prize.

The worst fighting in a ten years between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes causing numerous fatalities and hundreds of thousands forced to flee.

Historic Frontier Conflict

Thailand and Cambodia have a longstanding border dispute that originates from conflicts regarding colonial-era maps drawn up by the French. Ancient temples along the frontier are disputed by each nation.
